RUBS, the Ratio Utility Billing System, is a method of allocating utility costs to residents of master metered rental multi-family properties. Under RUBS, each resident receives a monthly bill from a billing company payable either on-site to management or to the billing company that handles payment processing. RUBS creates a variable charge, representing the resident’s pro-rata share of the property’s utility bill for the previous month. The share can be computed using various formulas. The most common methods used are 100% occupancy, a combination of occupancy & square footage or 100% on square footage.

Combination of gas and electricity bought from the same supplier is called dual fuel. It is cheaper than paying different suppliers for two forms of energy.
